My first semester at art school is comming to an end and I feel frustrated and confused in my struggle to choose a more defined career path. First I wanted to go for a graphic design major that would allow me to have the experience of going to art school, but to emerge with skills that would ensure a steady source of income. However, after having been exposed to the prosscess' of more hands on mediums such as printmaking and wood-craving, the idea of working with a computer seems boring and limited. Then after having been inspired by the Lowbrow/ Pop Surrealist culture (ex. Camille Rose Garcia, Mark Ryden, Glenn Barr . . ) I considered going into illustration, and altough Herron doenst offer a major in illustration, it''s still a viable option. And then there's the dream job . . . . .
Last October I spent my second year working in a haunted house. Maybe it's something about the sounds of screams and chainsaws in the autum air, maybe the strobe lights have messed up my head, or maybe it's just something about spending to much time alone in the dark with so many fake corpes, but my dream is to work creating halloween masks or animatronic props. Last winter I started experimenting with liquid latex and just a few days ago, I finally pulled my first full mask out of the mold. It's crude, unpainted and it smells funny, but I'm immensely proud of this because it means I'm one step closer.
Because of the time I've spent at school and work, I've had little time to keep my page updated, but I'd like to change that. Because I am confused about the future of my career in art I like to the next months focusing on the strengths and weakness in my collection of work and spend more of my time on drawing.
I spent the last month worrying over my portfolio, so I have'nt had time to do much else lately, hence the lack of new stuff on my page.
